Meat & Gravy From Bea & Baby (Blues From Bea & Baby Co.1960-72 (2-CD)

Size: 254 MB
Bitrade: 256mp3
Artwork Included
Active Between 1960-72. "Bea & Baby" was an early "Vanity Label", owned by influential Chicago deejay/clubowner CADILLAC BABY. Nonethless it was one of the most interesting indie labels in Chicago, and through his connections. Baby was able to record some major talent. These sides have been unavaiable for many years, and this marks their first appearance on CD.MEAT & GRAVY from Bea & Baby. Cadillac Baby (Narvel Eatmon) & his wife Bea ran everything from a night club to a recording studio to an assortment of store front enterprises only the CEO of Enron would love. The man definitely walked the shady side of the street. What an interesting charecter indeed. He recorded the following Homesick James, Eddie Boyd, Mac Simmions, James Cotton, Detriot Junior, Earl Hooker, Hound Dog Taylor & some extremely talented lesser lights like LC McKinley, Willie Williams, Singin' Sam, Andrew McMahon, Arlean Brown, Bobby Saxton, Willie Hudson, and Paul Hankins. TWO CDS of Chicago Blues, not a bad apple in the bunch. I listened to it TWICE thru & that doesn't happen often folks. A fabulous peak into Chicago Blues, circa 1960-70, & the kingdom of Cadillac Baby.

Van Morrison - Live At The Grand Opera House Belfast (1985)

Van Morrison is a legendary live performer, capable of invigorating, incendiary performances that can be utterly hypnotic, as the near-classic 1974 set It's Too Late to Stop Now illustrates. Released ten years later, Live at the Grand Opera House Belfast may not be as gripping, but Van wasn't as gripping a decade later, either. That's not to say he was past his prime, since he was still turning out fearless idiosyncratic records (and this, to be sure, fits right into that category). Still, he had become settled into a signature sound that may have been warm and filled with life, but it was so subtly shaded that it was primarily of interest only for the devoted. And that's what this record is -- an album for devoted fans, finding Van turning out passionate versions of latter-day tunes from "Full Force Gale" to "Cleaning Windows." Nothing particularly revelatory, yet it's a nice listen for those dedicated fans.Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine(allmusic.com)

Gary Moore - Back On The Streets - The Rock Collection(2004)

Irish rocker Gary Moore has always managed to exist somewhere in the netherworld of blues, pop, and hair metal. His enviable guitar chops helped him carve a career as a reliable sideman for everyone from Thin Lizzy to Rod Argent, but by the time he became immersed in the scene he'd developed a serious songwriting bug. Back on the Streets: The Rock Collection captures the heavier side of Moore through 12 cuts culled from his solo releases in the '80s. Moore's pop sensibilities become apparent on the opening track, 1985's "Out in the Fields," which features guest vocalist Phil Lynott embellishing one of Moore's most memorable melodies. What follows is an often frustratingly by-the-books tutorial on anthemic hard rock posturing. There's the obligatory "Eruption"-style intro to "Murder in the Skies" and a slick, power ballad version of the Yardbirds classic "Shapes of Things." One of his best cuts, 1987's thunderous Celtic romp "Over the Hills and Far Away" -- not the Led Zeppelin song -- has been sadly omitted, leaving room for forgettable live renditions of "Wishing Well," "Wild Frontier," and "Back on the Streets." Speaking of Led Zeppelin, the real highlight of The Rock Collection is "Led Clones," a brilliantly executed parody of mid-'80s Zeppelin wannabes Whitesnake and Kingdom Come, set to a thunderous "Kashmir" backbeat with a searing lead vocal from Ozzy Osbourne.Review by James Christopher Monger(allmusic.com)

Sting and Gil Evans - The Last Session (1987)

Last Session is a live concert recording of the Gil Evans Band, with Sting as special guest, taken from the Perugia Jazz Festival in Italy on July 11, 1987. The recording was never released in the U.S., but was available only on the Italian label Jazz Door. Sting joins jazz legend pianist , composer Gil Evans ( the man who Miles Davis called the Greatest Musician on earth ) on this recording. The synergy between Evans and Sting seems to help Sting unleash a raw and passionate power and results in a highly savored live performance. Branford Marsalis adds some superb tenor sax work to the performance. Gil Evans, to Sting fans who might not know, was a jazz icon, known for his talents as composer and arranger (typically for big band) and for his collaborations with Miles Davis back in the day. Sting was a big Evans fan, and when they finally met, the two exchanged compliments and joined forces in 1987 for this concert and in the studio for Sting's Nothing Like the Sun album (with Gil arranging and playing on "Little Wing"). This concert may in fact be the "Last [recorded] Session" of Gil Evans, who died within the next year at the age of 76. The concert has Gil's band (whose 19-piece ensemble notably featured George Adams on tenor sax, Lew Soloff on trumpet, Mark Egan on bass, and Branford Marsalis who no doubt was accompanying Sting, guesting on tenor and soprano sax) along with Sting exploring two numbers by mutual admiree Jimi Hendrix ("Exp" and "Little Wing"), two more traditional jazz tunes ("Strange Fruit" - written for and immortalized by Billie Holliday, and "There Comes a Time," by drummer Tony Williams), and five Sting/Police songs. Most of the tunes exceed the 6-minute mark, giving space for blowing solos by members of band and for Sting to get improvisational (often adding snippets from other songs into choruses).

Charlie Parker : Jazz at Massey Hall 1953

One of the most famous live recordings in jazz history, this May 1953 concert from Toronto brought together five of bebop's greatest figures in alto saxophonist Charlie Parker (credited here as "Charlie Chan" in a purposely transparent attempt to sidestep Parker's exclusive recording arrangement with another record company), trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, drummer Max Roach, and bassist Charles Mingus. Released following Parker's death two years after the date, the recording finds him in remarkable form, his playing robust, pointed, and witty. And although each participant is a band leader, composer, and groundbreaking stylist on his instrument, the performance demonstrates that Parker remained first among equals. Compositionally, Jazz at Massey Hall leans heavily on the bebop book developed by Gillespie, and includes "Salt Peanuts," "Wee," and "A Night in Tunisia." Also featured are Tadd Dameron's "Hot House," the Ellington standard "Perdido," and "All the Things You Are." Initially released on Debut Records, a label co-owned by Mingus and Roach, the sound quality is certainly of the time, but has benefited over the years from digital technology. --Fred Goodman

B.B. King and the Crusaders - Royal Jam (1982)

Ry Cooder - Crossroads (sountrack)(1986)

This album was written and directed by Ry Cooder, the awesome one eyed slide guitarist. The album is predominantly mississippi delta blues in different speeds and styles. The first tune (crossroads – a reworking of the robert johnson number) is a fine upbeat version and there is also some good base vocalists in amongst the singers. The pick for me is track 8 (feelin’ bad blues). This shows ry cooder at his slide guitar best, creating a reverberating and atmospheric sound. It is strange that they seem to have missed off some of the great tunes from the film, but the album is still good for any one who likes blues.

Ry Cooder - Jazz (1978)

Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1970, Ry Cooder's records seemed to be as much history lesson as they were entertainment. Not because Cooder was trying to club you over the head with this stuff; he simply gravitated to great songs, no matter what the era or genre. Released in 1978, Jazz seems to be his first conscious attempt at a concept album, in the historical sense. Here he pays homage to some of the early tunes and masters of jazz, ranging from the late 1800s through the "coon songs" of the early part of the next century, to the ragtime and "Spanish" music of Jelly Roll Morton, and the sophistication of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. The only living artist (at the time of release) who's represented here is the great Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence, who recorded from the '50s through the '80s, and whose syncopated style was extremely influential in Cooder's own development as a guitarist. Spence's sacred songs are presented here in string and brass band arrangements that emphasize the Caribbean connection between his music and Morton's habaniera pieces. The complexity of the material on Jazz, as well as the arrangements by Joseph Byrd, dictate that this is Cooder's most polished and orchestrated effort to date. Whereas in the past, even at their most removed, Cooder's records usually kept at least one foot in rock & roll or blues, Jazz can, at times, lack some of that fire and be almost bookish in its approach. Still, there is enough excitement in the music's intricacies and Cooder's beautiful, fluid playing to forgive the politeness of some of the performances. From the informative liner notes by Ry Cooder himself to the brilliant compositions, Jazz is, at the very least, educational. But, a little time spent with this music and you'll see why it was and continues to be relevant, as well as beloved.

S-a nascut pe 2 aprilie 1915, in Bucuresti. Mult timp, Gica Petrescu a refuzat sa mai cante in public. Chicken Shack - Imagination Lady (1972)

Imagination Lady is the fifth long-player for Stan Webb's Chicken Shack. Much in the same tradition as the great British bluesmen Alexis Corner and John Mayall, Webb's revolving-door personnel landed the band several notable members, including: John Almond (tenor/alto sax), Hughie Flint (drums), and Christine Perfect (keyboards/vocals). For this album, Webb (guitar/vocals) gathered a trio consisting of himself, future Gods and Jethro Tull member John Glascock (bass), and Paul Hancox (drums). Enthusiasts of the more traditional 40 Blue Fingers, Freshly Packed and Ready to Serve and OK Ken albums have been quick to dismiss the latter-era band, often citing the whole over amplified power metal trip as detracting from their blues origins. While certainly valid assessments, the power trio featured on Imagination Lady brings more than sheer volume to this release. As with the previous Chicken Shack long-players, this disc features several Webb originals augmented with some well-chosen cover tunes. The album opens with a ferocious cover of B.B. King's "Crying Won't Help You." This version is highlighted by Glascock's thrashing basslines and Webb's wah-wah driven lead guitar and gin-soaked vocals. In a style akin to the Faces or even some of the rowdier moments from the Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac, this trio grinds out the blues with a decidedly English edge. The folkie "If I Were a Carpenter" is speared with searing electric guitar leads that rip throughout the likewise spirited contributions from Glascock and Hancox. The tune is also afforded an unexpected sensitivity that contrasts well between the all-out sonic onslaught of the chorus and the restrained polyrhythms of the verses. In regards to original material, "Daughter of the Hillside" is without a doubt Webb's most impressive contribution to the album. It is arguably the strongest side on the disc. This straight-ahead rocker is an ideal trio effort with equal contributions from all three recalling the intense instrumentality of Cream or early Led Zeppelin. With so much potential, it's unfortunate that the 11-minute epic "Telling Your Fortune" -- which is nothing more than a 12-bar blues platform for solos from Webb and Hancox -- is so erratic. In an ironic contrast, the closing number "The Loser" is upbeat and almost pop-oriented, again displaying the immense strength of this short-lived incarnation of Chicken Shack.Review by Lindsay Planer

Return to the Dark Side of the Moon: A Tribute to Pink Floyd(May 16, 2006)

Following in the footsteps of 2005's Back Against the Wall, 2006's Return to the Dark Side of the Moon is a star-studded prog rock tribute album to one of rock's all-time greatest bands and albums. Producer Billy Sherwood has reassembled many of the same players from Back Against the Wall for his latest Pink Floyd tribute, and the result is the same -- professional renditions of the songs, without a lot of experimentation. As a result, the songs aren't that remarkably different from the originals. On the album opening "Breathe," Adrian Belew almost perfectly replicates the original's airy vocals, Styx's Tommy Shaw belts out the vocals to "Money," while Dweezil Zappa's brief guitar shredding on "Us and Them" doesn't exactly fit the original's laid-back feel. That said, if you're a classic rock or prog rock fanatic, you can't argue with the additional renowned names who contribute -- Jeff Baxter, Robbie Krieger, Rick Wakeman, Steve Howe, Edgar Winter, Bill Bruford, John Wetton, Tony Levin, and more. Ultimately however -- as with Back Against the Wall -- Return to the Dark Side of the Moon: A Tribute to Pink Floyd will only appeal to hardcore Floyd buffs.Review by Greg Prato

Paul Rodgers - Muddy Water Blues

Paul Rodgers' tribute to Muddy Waters is not a return to Waters' electric Chicago blues, but a continuation of the blues-rock of Rodgers' old bands, Free and Bad Company. Taken on those terms, Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters works only when Rodgers is matched with a good blues-rock guitarist. Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, and Gary Moore all play well, while Richie Sambora, Neal Schon, and Trevor Rabin all sound a bit lost; the rest, including David Gilmour and Brian May, fall somewhere in between.Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Elf - Elf(1972)

By the time he came to prominence as the lead singer of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Ronnie James Dio had accumulated an extensive rock & roll résumé (longer than he'd like to admit, actually) performing with a number of groups, ranging from doo-wop in the late '50s to psychedelic rock in the '60s. But it wasn't until he founded Elf in the early '70s that Dio, or Ronald Padavona as he was then called, took his first tentative steps toward hard rock. Still, with the honky tonk piano playing of Mickey Lee Soule dominating many of its songs, Elf's self-titled Epic Records debut (produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover) hardly qualifies as a bona fide heavy metal record. In fact, tracks like "Hoochie Koochie Lady," "First Avenue," and "Sit Down Honey" sound more like the Rolling Stones than Black Sabbath, and it's only occasionally ("I'm Coming Back to You," "Gambler Gambler") that the band produces truly stripped-down, gritty hard rock. "Never More" is perhaps the album's most interesting track, starting with lilting piano and a dramatic delivery from Dio (sounding rather like Freddie Mercury) before launching into a driving hard rock riff in the vein of his best work with Rainbow and Sabbath in later years. A must-own for Dio fanatics only.Review by Ed Rivadavia

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac(1968)

Fleetwood Mac's debut LP was a highlight of the late-'60s British blues boom. Green's always inspired playing, the capable (if erratic) songwriting, and the general panache of the band as a whole placed them leagues above the overcrowded field. Elmore James is a big influence on this set, particularly on the tunes fronted by Jeremy Spencer ("Shake Your Moneymaker," "Got to Move"). Spencer's bluster, however, was outshone by the budding singing and songwriting skills of Green. The guitarist balanced humor and vulnerability on cuts like "Looking for Somebody" and "Long Grey Mare," and with "If I Loved Another Woman," he offered a glimpse of the Latin-blues fusion that he would perfect with "Black Magic Woman." The album was an unexpected smash in the U.K., reaching number four on the British charts.Review by Richie Unterberger

Fleetwood Mac-Mr. Wonderful(1968)

Although it made number ten in the U.K., Fleetwood Mac's second album was a disappointment following their promising debut. So much of the record was routine blues that it could even be said that it represented something of a regression from the first LP, despite the enlistment of a horn section and pianist Christine Perfect (the future Christine McVie) to help on the sessions. In particular, the limits of Jeremy Spencer's potential for creative contribution were badly exposed, as the tracks that featured his songwriting and/or vocals were basic Elmore James covers or derivations. Peter Green, the band's major talent at this point, did not deliver original material on the level of the classic singles he would pen for the band in 1969, or even on the level of first-album standouts like "I Loved Another Woman." The best of the lot, perhaps, is "Love That Burns," with its mournful minor-key melody and sluggish, responsive horn lines. Mr. Wonderful, strangely, was not issued in the U.S., although about half the songs turned up on its stateside counterpart, English Rose, which was fleshed out with some standout late-'60s British singles and a few new tracks penned by Danny Kirwan (who joined the band after Mr. Wonderful was recorded).Review by Richie Unterberger

Muddy Waters - Hard Again (1977)

After a string of mediocre albums throughout most of the 1970s, Muddy Waters hooked up with Johnny Winter for 1977's Hard Again, a startling comeback and a gritty demonstration of the master's powers. Fronting a band that includes such luminaries as James Cotton and "Pine Top" Perkins, Waters is not only at the top of his game, but is having the time of his life while he's at it. The bits of studio chatter that close "Mannish Boy" and open "Bus Driver" show him to be relaxed and obviously excited about the proceedings. Part of this has to be because the record sounds so good. Winter has gone for an extremely bare production style, clearly aiming to capture Waters in conversation with a band in what sounds like a single studio room. This means that sometimes the songs threaten to explode in chaos as two or three musicians begin soloing simultaneously. Such messiness is actually perfect in keeping with the raw nature of this music; you simply couldn't have it any other way. There is something so incredibly gratifying about hearing Waters shout out for different soloists, about the band missing hits or messing with the tempos. Hey this isn't pop music, it's the blues, and a little dirt never hurt anybody. The unsung star of this session is drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, whose deep grooves make this record come alive. The five-minute, one-chord "Mannish Boy" wouldn't be nearly as compelling as it is if it weren't for Smith's colossal pocket. Great blues from one of the dominant voices of the genre.Review by Daniel Gioffre
