JOHN LAWTON & STEVE DUNNING - Steppin' It Up (2002)

Uriah Heep's singer for three late-70s studio albums, John Lawton has put behind him a short-lived collaboration with Ken Hensley; for 'Steppin' It Up', the Geordie frontman has turned to Steve Dunning, a bassist/ guitarist whose talent currently dwarfs his reputation. Comprised mainly of leisurely, acoustic-based interpretations of key songs from Lawton's history, the dozen tunes here are the ideal soundtrack for a late-summer Sunday afternoon. Towering above them all is a medley of 'Firefly'/'Come Back To Me', the latter written by Heep drummer Lee Kerslake during a painful divorce, but which will forever be associated with Lawton's gravelly vocals. 'Feelings', a Hensley penned track recorded by Heep with his successor John Sloman, might seem an odd choice, but it sounds marvellous here. Elsewhere, more recent offerings like 'Payin' My Dues To The Blues' showcase Lawton's rootsier side, while 'Wise Man' (from 'Firefly' reminds us of his proficiency as a balladeer. 'Fallen Angel' track, 'One More Night (Last Farewell)' concludes things in boogie-woogie fashion, also incorporating a piano contribution from current Heep keyboardist Phil Lanzon.

Time Traders represents the continuing comeback for blues guitar legend Peter Green. If Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac was the high profile, star-making vehicle for Mr. Green, Splinter Group is a comparatively low-key ensemble where the man can comfortably do his thing. He continues to groove with blues-based music that solidifies his position as one of the best modern interpreters of the genre. Peter Green reached his zenith as a creative performer in 1969. His guitar playing, singing and songwriting were cutting edge, and his music from that era stands up remarkably well. It is a fitting tribute to his excellence that so much music from the vaults from that era continues to be unearthed and released. Those of us who worshiped and glorified Peter Green back then should not be disappointed with this recording. Manfred Mann`s Earth Band Nightingales & BombersThis is MMEB's most convincing album by a long shot. No disrespect to some of the other album releases but Nightingales and Bombers delivers such conviction in each and every song it is sometimes hard to believe this was released in 1975. BTW 1975 is the ultimate year for prog releases IMHO. ' Spirits in the Night' starts the album off on a slow beat with great lyrics ( a wonderful Springsteen cover ) Countdown, Time is Right and Crossfade are virtually one song meshed together but I have to agree with another reviewer here the clean, definitive sounds coming off ' Time is Right' are bound to get that adrenalin pumping!The second side starts with the poignant ' Visionary Mountains', Joan Armatrading guesting on backing vocals, the albums continues to deliver with Fat Nelly, the title track and the live version of ' As above so below'. I keep referring to 1975 and well Oldfield released Ommadawn, PF released Wish You Were Here and MMEB were almost equals with this mesmerizing album, Nightingales and Bombers. I guess what I am trying to say is add this release to your collection if you are new to prog rock or for some weird insane reason you missed it first time round.

Forget ‘Do Wah Diddy’, ‘5-4-3-3-1’, ‘Pretty Flamingoes’ and ‘The Mighty Quinn’ ‘cos you’ll not see nothing like…. these pop ditties again, ‘cos by 1973, Manfred Mann had embraced progressive rock by the proverbial collar. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band consisted of the Mann himself on organ, synths and vocals, Mick Rogers on vocals and guitar, Colin Pattenden on bass guitar and Chris Slade on Fibes drums. This was the third album of this congregation(1) and ‘Solar Fire’ was sandwiched between ‘Messin’ which had been released earlier the same year and ‘The Good Earth’(2) – released in 1974.The first two albums had been, to say the least, patchy, but ‘Solar Fire’ embraced the popular, progressive music of the time and was a pinnacle for the band, before they ventured off into the MOR, mid ‘70s ‘Springstonian’ mainstream. It ccould be described as a ‘progressive/chorale experience’ that separates it from many ‘trudgey’ albums of the same era.

This is a progressive hard rock album. I must admit that the bass, the guitars and the drums are well played, never simple. The guitar has a good hard rock sound, not too strong, giving all the room necessary for the keyboards exhibition. What make MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND unique is certainly those keyboards sounds. Organ, moog, piano... Often experimental and amazing, they are never dull and are quite sophisticated: you can notice how versatile he can be on "Earth, The Cycle" songs.

John Lennon joined Elton John on stage in Madison Square Garden for what would be Lennon's last live performance.While recording Lennon's Walls and Bridges album, Elton John remarked that if "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" went to #1, Lennon would have to perform with Elton on stage. Lennon took him up on the offer and when the song charted at #1, Lennon fulfilled his promise and joined Elton on stage at the Madison Square Garden.

British rocker Steve Harley was born Steven Nice in London on February 27, 1951; the son of a jazz singer, he was stricken with polio at age two and spent the better part of his adolescence in and out of hospitals. After trying his hand at journalism, by the early '70s Harley was busking throughout London, forming the band Cockney Rebel in 1973 with guitarist Jean Paul Crocker, bassist Paul Jeffreys, keyboardist Milton Reame James, and drummer Stuart Elliott. Signing to EMI, the group debuted with The Human Menagerie; the single "Judy Teen" followed in early in 1974, becoming Cockney Rebel's first hit.
